We
all experience anxiety to various degrees in situations where we
feel insecure, unsure or afraid. However, it has been estimated
that 2 - 4% of the population has, at some time, experienced anxiety
to such an extent that it can be classified as an Anxiety Disorder.
Those suffering from chronic anxiety will attest to the fact that
it is a condition which ranges from uncomfortable to extremely debilitating.
Every day doctors prescribe prescription drugs to people suffering
from anxiety and Anxiety Disorders are one of the most commonly
treated problems in therapy. Some of the
symptoms
of Anxiety Disorders include panic attacks (also called anxiety
attacks), phobias, obsessive compulsive thoughts and behaviours
and generalized feelings of anxiety and fear in situations where
there is no real cause for concern or where the anxiety symptoms
are out of proportion.
Although
Anxiety Disorders respond well to psychotherapy, many people suffering
from anxiety are never referred to a psychologist and are instead
treated with prescription drugs. Many of these drugs come with a
range of side effects and some are highly addictive. Instead of
merely prescribing medication, doctors should take some time in
assessing their patients and listening to their concerns. Techniques
like meditation, relaxation therapy and cognitive-behavioural therapy
are very effective in managing the symptoms of anxiety and put the
individual back in control. There is also a wide range of herbal
and homeopathic remedies which can help to reduce anxiety and soothe
anxiety symptoms without risk of addiction or severe side effects.
While
most Anxiety Disorders are psychological in origin, anxiety symptoms
may sometimes accompany medical problems like hyperthyroidism, nutritional
deficiencies, chemical and hormonal imbalances and other conditions.
It is important that a thorough medical examination is carried out
to rule out these possibilities.
