What is ringworm?

Ringworm is a contagious skin condition occurring commonly in both cats and dogs and is actually caused, not by a worm, but by a fungus. Ringworm may cause various lesions on the skin and these are not always in the shape of a ring. You may notice your pet scratching at areas that look scaly and inflamed and, with time, the hair in these patches may be lost. Ringworm lesions are most often found on the face, ears and paws but in severe infections may affect the whole body. Persian cats are predisposed to Ringworm, but any animal with a weakened immune system is at risk for the fungus. Ringworm can look very similar to a number of other skin conditions including mange and allergic conditions, so if in doubt it is important to take your pet to a vet in order to be sure of the diagnosis. Diagnosis is usually made by taking a sample of the affected hair and sending it to a lab to be cultured.

Ringworm is contagious – and will appear the same on human skin (most commonly as a ring, but can also be an irregular red, dry patch). Ringworm may thus be passed back and forth from a family member or members with a weakened immune system to a pet with a weakened immune system. If you contract Ringworm, speak to your health care professional about treatment (usually a topical cream) – and keep your immune system boosted with a healthy diet and exercise!

What is the conventional treatment?

Usual treatment of ringworm involves use of anti-fungal shampoos or creams. In severe cases oral anti-fungal medication may be used but this has the potential to cause side-effects. Although in most healthy pets ringworm may resolve spontaneously after several weeks, treatment is necessary to speed this up due to the risk of infection of humans and other pets and the discomfort that this condition can cause to your pet.

What are the Ingredients?

Melaleuca alternifolia is also known as Tea Tree Oil and is used externally for inflammation and to treat various skin conditions. This oil has excellent anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and healing properties. Tea Tree Oil will soothe and reduce inflammation of the skin as well as effectively treat any bacterial or fungal infections. Calendula officinalis (Marigold) is an herbal ingredient used to treat skin problems and promote healing of wounds. How do I use PetAlive Ring-Ex?

PetAlive Ring-Ex comes in a convenient 30 ml dropper bottle and is easy to apply.

Directions: Wear disposable latex gloves to prevent contracting Ringworm. Initial cleansing with PetAlive Clenzor is recommended. After cleansing, apply a few drops of Ring-Ex to affected area three times daily, making sure that the entire affected area is covered. A clean cotton bud may be used if necessary. Continue use for approximately 5 - 7 days after all signs of Ringworm infection have cleared to prevent recurrence of the condition. Regularly inspect your pet's coat for signs of new lesions in order to begin treatment as early as possible. The sooner treatment is begun the better and early treatment has the best chance of speedy recovery.

Yikes! So your pet has ringworm and you risk becoming the talk of the neighbourhood!! Certainly Ringworm is not a good topic for dinner conversation but is fairly common amongst young animals, young children too! It can often be confusing trying to work out whether your puppy got ringworm from your child or vice versa. The reason that young animals are predisposed to ringworm infection is due to the immaturity of their immune system. Animals and people with strong, healthy immune systems are unlikely to contract ringworm. I certainly have never had a case of ringworm despite treating many ringworm infected pets.
