Ditch the Itch!
An itch- one of the most irritating sensations for a dog! An itch can be caused by a wide number of factors that cause nerve endings in the skin surface to become irritated. Latest experiments have shown that the animal body is covered by "itch spots" (small spots of the skin that convey a sensation of itch when lightly touched). An itch can only be evoked from superficial layers of skin and mild scratching is one of the best ways to relieve the itch – as it excites the neurons with un-insulated axons. Scientists believe that the massive signal that mild scratching sends to certain populations of pain neurons temporarily overwhelms or masks the itch sensation. Fleas, mites and skin conditions like Eczema, Dandruff, Dermatitis and Scabies can all lead to intense itching – that drives your pet wild with frustration. Some animals will itch so severely, that they create open wounds that bleed and fester.
The Natural Way
There is a lot that can be done naturally to help relieve itchiness for your dog. Try not to use harsh detergents on your dogs bedding and don’t feed them human treats. Always dry your dog off properly after a swim or bath and never use human shampoos or cosmetics on your animals. (See our dog bathing tips below).

Cathy's Tips:
Tips for bathing your dog:
Place a rubber mat in your bathtub for secure footing.
Place a cotton ball in each of your dog’s ears to prevent water from entering (make sure they do not get stuck too far in the ear.
Rinse your dog with warm water (check the temperature carefully).
Use a spray hose if one is available (be sure to keep the nozzle very close to your dog’s body). Never spray him or her in the face.
Apply a shampoo designed especially for dogs in small amounts, working from the head to the tail.
Be sure to clean the rectum, between the toes, behind the ears and under the chin.
Try to avoid getting shampoo in your dog’s eyes.
Thoroughly rinse your dog with warm water (this is very important)
Dry your dog with a towel and/or hair dryer (on the lowest setting).
Turn the dryer on while pointing away from the dog to get him/her use to the noise. Then slowly take up to your dog and start blowing.
When your dog is dried or mostly dry you can take out and comb him/her out.
