The Natural Way
Herbs have been traditionally used for many years. Unlike conventional medicines, where the active compound of a herb is extracted and then synthesised, herbalists use the whole herb, as the plant, being a part of Nature, is said to represent perfect balance. Thanks to modern technology, research can identify some of the specific properties and interactions of botanical constituents. With ongoing scientific documentation, we are beginning to realize the importance and value held in nature’s medicine chest.
Over the last few years, natural and alternative therapy has become more and more popular amongst pet owners, especially as unlike conventional drug therapies, natural therapies are side effect free. By adopting a natural, holistic approach to your pet's wellbeing you will ensure that all factors that affect your pet's health are in balance and that your pet's innate healing mechanisms are functioning optimally.

Cathy’s Tips:
Ageing is an inevitable part of your pet’s life and just as is the case with us bipeds, your pets will age differently. On average, although this differs for varying breeds of dogs and to a lesser extent cats, each dog/cat year is the equivalent of 7 human years.
As your pet gets older joints get stiffer, coats go greyer, eyes and ears are less able, and your pet may spend much time sleeping or just gazing into space. Just like humans, pets show signs of senility which is thought to be partly due to a decreased supply of oxygen to the cells in the brain. By dilating the small blood vessels in the brain, blood supply is improved and therefore more cells receive more oxygen and your pet will be more alert.
During an illness your pet’s energy requirements are greater, however due to the illness your pet’s appetite may be suppressed so even thought the body is crying our for more food so that energy is available for repair and recovery your pet will still turn their nose up at even the most appetizing meal. It is hardly surprising then that weight loss accompanies any serious illness. During illness, feed small amounts of high energy, easily digestible food, free from colourants and preservatives to speed your pet on the way to health.
Your pet’s requirements will change as they age, remember to take your pet for regular dental check ups, don’t let them pile on the pounds and adjust their exercise programme to fit their needs.
Comfy, cosy beds will be much appreciated by the senior pet to get them through the chilly winter months.
The Golden Years of your pet’s life can be very rewarding and a natural, holistic approach to this time in their life will make for a memorable ending to your friendship with your beloved pet.
