What
are the Ingredients?
Chikkie Spot Drops
contain the following carefully chosen herbal ingredients in therapeutic
dosages:
Melissa Officinalis
(Lemon Balm) is indigenous to the Eastern Mediterranean region, but is
widespread throughout the world. It has been used since the middle ages as a
calmative herb to soothe and promote healthy sleep. While acting as a
general nervous system tonic, Lemon Balm will also help to encourage a
naturally healthy appetite in your child.
Scutellaria
Laterifolia (Scullcap) is native to North
America, but is now well used world wide. Scullcap is one of the best known
nerve relaxing tonics, with an excellent calming effect, and is especially
good at soothing anxiety, excitability and stress
Echinacea Pupurea
is another Native American herb that has become famous for its ability
to boost the body’s immune system. Echinacea is an excellent immune system
tonic as it supports the body’s production of immune cells.
Chikkie Spot Drops contain
less than 1% pure pharmaceutical grade ethanol when used as directed.
How have Chikkie
Spot Drops helped other children?
“Thank you
for your wonderful remedies and advice. I used your Chikkie Spot Drops for
my son (aged 4) and they were a great help. He is quite highly strung and
usually gets very wound up when he is ill. I was very worried but your
Chikkie Spot Drops really helped to calm him down and allowed me to look
after him properly. The Chikkie Spot Cream also worked very well!” Nicola, WA
“My eldest
child, from my first marriage, had it many years ago and it was such a
battle to keep him relaxed and not scratching. When my two little girls from
my current marriage, came home from school with it I was terrified that I
was going to go through the same thing again - twice over. Someone at their
school recommended your Chikkie Drops and they helped such a lot. It was
much easier to keep them peaceful and the Chikkie Spot Soother also really
helped with the itching. Within a week they were much better and the best
part is they have no scars either!”
Grateful
Mom, TX

What is Chicken Pox and how is it spread?
Chicken pox is a highly contagious childhood disease that
is caused by the Varicella Zoster virus, a member of the Herpes virus
family. Very few children escape chicken pox infection, but those that do
may catch it later in life as an adult. Chicken pox in childhood is usually
relatively mild, but tends to be more severe in adulthood.
The chicken pox virus is easily spread either directly,
through contact with the spots, or through the air by coughing, sneezing,
laughing and even talking. Once your child has contracted the virus it can
take anywhere from 7-21 days before the spots appear.
One attack of chicken pox
usually gives your child lifelong immunity. Children rarely have a second
round of chicken pox, but if it does occur, the attacks are usually very
mild.
What are the symptoms of Chicken Pox?
While some children have no symptoms prior to the
characteristic rash appearing others may complain of feeling ill or may have
a fever for a day or two beforehand. It is important to note that any child
with chicken pox is contagious from about 2 days before the rash appears
until all the spots have crusted or scabbed over.
The signs that your child may be coming down with chicken
pox are much like those for any viral illness and include the following:
·
Headache
·
Fatigue
·
Loss of
appetite
·
Moderate
fever
·
Achiness
At first, therefore, your child may appear unwell and
feverish, but you will not be able to determine the cause for a day or two,
or until the chicken pox spots begin to appear. Here is how you can tell the
chicken pox spots from other spots or rashes:
·
Initially
flat, red splotchy dots, no bigger than a pencil eraser, appear.
·
The rash
usually starts on the chest, stomach and back and then spreads a day or so
later to the face, scalp and the rest of the body. The rash is very rarely
seen on the palms of the hands or the soles of the feet.
·
Within a
few hours these red spots turn into tiny blisters that are extremely itchy.
·
As the
blisters are scratched they ‘pop’ and the fluid (serum) that leaks out of
them forms a crust. This fluid is full of the virus and is highly
contagious.
·
As new
spots can keep coming out for the next 2-6 days, you will often see new red
spots alongside older, crusted blisters. This is very characteristic of
chicken pox.
·
The number
of spots depends on the severity of the infection. Some children can be
covered in spots, even inside the mouth and in the genital region, and
others will only have a few spots.
How long will it take for my child to
recover from Chicken Pox?
Most children recover from chicken pox uneventfully in less
than two weeks. Remember, your child is infectious from 1-2 days prior to
the rash appearing until all the spots have crusted over and dried out.
The more intimate and
more frequent the exposure to chickenpox, the more severe the infection will
be. This fact has very important implications, especially if you have more
than one child. Children in different stages of the disease should be
separated to minimize their exposure to each other. With minimal exposure,
the second child to become ill is likely to have a less severe case of
chicken pox, with less discomfort.
One of the biggest problems with chicken pox is infected
blisters. The spots are extremely itchy and it is very difficult not to
scratch. Once the blisters are scratched open secondary bacterial infection
can occur and this, combined with picking off the scabs, is what usually
leads to scarring. For this reason, scratching of the spots needs to be kept
to a minimum and hands and the spots themselves should be kept clean.
What can I do to help my child with
Chicken Pox?
Most treatment today can do very little for chicken pox and
the few agents that are available tend to have severe side effects. Natural
remedies can help by calming your child and boosting the immune system’s
response. The less anxious and irritable children are, the more likely they
are to scratch as little as possible.
Try some of these simple home techniques to ease your
child’s discomfort:
·
Keep
children occupied with games or activities to take their minds off the itch;
·
Regular
cool baths, without soap, are very soothing. Pat, do not rub, your child
dry. Remember to use a clean towel every time and do not allow other family
members to share the same towel;
·
Half a cup
of oatmeal or baking soda added to bathwater helps to relieve the itch;
·
Dip a
washcloth in cool water and place over the itchy area;
·
Trim
fingernails and wash hands regularly in antiseptic soap to prevent
infection;
·
Cover the
hands of infants with cotton socks if they are scratching;
·
Keep your
child cool and calm – heat and sweating worsen the itch. A fan or
airconditioning in the room can work wonders!
·
Keep your
child out of the sun – sun exposed skin develops extra blisters;
·
Give your
child soft foods and fluids if there are blisters in the mouth. Avoid citrus
and acid foods like tomatoes and pineapple as they will sting;
·
Prepare
simple, clean, whole-foods that are high in vitamins and minerals;
·
Offer
plenty of fluids to ensure that your child remains well hydrated;
·
Frozen
fruit-juice popsicles are very popular – they are soothing and help your
child to take in some fluids and vitamins;
·
Gargling
with salt water (1/4 teaspoon salt to 4 ounces water) will help relieve
itchy blisters in the mouth;
·
Keep
children who have chickenpox separated from each other. This can mean a
milder case for the second child who comes down with the disease.
·
Give your
child lots of TLC and reassure him/her that the ‘bumps’ are not serious and
will go away in a week or so.
Are there any times when I should worry?
Complications of chicken
pox are generally rare and in most children the illness resolves within two
weeks. Children with a decreased immune system, eg due to illness or
medication, are at a higher risk of complications including encephalitis (an
inflammation of the brain), meningitis (inflammation of the brain linings)
or pneumonia.
Consult your health care provider if your child exhibits any of the
following:
·
A fever
higher than 103°F on any one occasion, or higher than 102°F for two days;
·
Any of the
scabs are red, oozing pus or bleeding;
Seek emergency care if your child exhibits any of the following:
·
Severe
headache, stiff neck, seizures, abnormal behavior and/or continuous
vomiting;
·
Hard to
wake, confused or having difficulty breathing;
·
Is taking
any medication that lowers the immune system, or has cancer.
Remember,
most cases of chicken pox are usually relatively mild and resolve with self
care at home. The best thing you can do is show children plenty of love,
keep them calm and relaxed and do all that you can to help the itchiness and
stop the scratching.
