Time to stifle the sniffles
Nose and chest congestion makes everyone uncomfortable from adults to babies. Although it is not easy, as you get older the discomfort is a little more tolerable, but very small babies that are unable to breathe properly fuss a lot. The immune system is triggered to fight invading germs, causing a build-up of mucus, phlegm and fluid in the nose and chest. However, congestion means that the germs are lodged in the body and are unable to exit freely through the nose. Thus, it is important to get the mucus flowing freely and a good idea to encourage the expulsion of any phlegm.

The Natural Way
There are many natural ways to help open blocked noses and chests to promote easy breathing. Congestion in both adults and children causes agitation and restlessness due to hindered breathing. Blocked noses also often mean sleeping with your mouths open, leaving you vulnerable to sore throats. A stuffy nose may also lead to blocked sinuses, earaches, and further distress and pain. There are a number of things that can be done to keep noses chests clear. At night, try propping children up with extra pillows. This will raise their heads and cause them to sleep at an angle, facilitating easier breathing through the night. You can also try using a plug-in device such as a vaporizer, which releases softly soothing vapors such as lavender and chamomile to aid clear and easy breathing. Natural remedies have long been used to maintain clear chests and support easy breathing.

Information on colds and flu in children

All of our remedies are carefully formulated and manufactured according to the principles of naturopathic medicine to promote healthy body systems and to maintain and encourage normal healthy functioning of all body organs, including the chest, nose and respiratory system.

It is important to promote the education and awareness of the public in terms of the link between lifestyle and long term health. It is in the spirit of helping to increase awareness of the relationship between diet, lifestyle and health that we offer the following information on upper respiratory tract infections in children. Please note that this information is offered for educational purposes only and is not intended to be a substitute for professional medical attention. When in doubt, please consult your health practitioner.

Colds and Flu
Colds and flu are infections which mainly involve the upper respiratory tract and are caused by viruses. Colds and flu can cause many of the same symptoms, but a cold is generally milder, while flu tends to be more severe.

There are more than 100 different viruses that can cause the common cold! Flu is also caused by viruses - the Influenza virus. There are fewer viruses that cause flu and this is why a vaccination can be produced.

Symptoms of colds and flu
The first signs and symptoms of a cold normally present as feeling tired, sneezing, coughing and having a runny nose. Your child may not have a fever at all or may run a low fever - just 1 or 2 degrees higher than usual. Flu generally starts more suddenly and can be more severe. Weakness and fatigue are common. Your child may have a fever, dry cough, a runny nose, chills, muscle aches, a headache and a sore throat. It usually takes longer to get over the flu than a cold.

Both illnesses can cause children to become miserable and grouchy. Flu often leads to decreased appetite and refusal to eat. Often, with the difficulties of breathing through a blocked nose, sleep becomes problematic too.

Why are children more susceptible to colds and flu?
Childrens’ immune systems are not as strong or well-developed as adults’, making them more vulnerable to infections of all types. Children who go to kindergarten, day-care and after-care are particularly at risk as they come into close contact with many other children every day and we all know that hygiene and hand-washing are not always top priorities for little ones!
How are colds and flu usually treated?
Colds and flu are usually treated with bed-rest and symptomatic medication until the body’s own immune system overcomes the infection. There are no allopathic medications to cure colds or flu. Although antibiotics are sometimes prescribed, they are not effective against viruses and will only help in the case of secondary infections. Children who become repeatedly infected due to exposure at day care centers may find themselves on one course of antibiotic after the other, often compounding the problem.

Over the counter medicines like paracetamol, as well as various cough and cold products are often used to treat symptoms. However, many of these come with side effects. Decongestant drugs can be very effective, but cause side-effects like increased irritability and hyperactivity. They can also “over-dry” the nose and mucus membranes - causing discomfort. It is also important to remember that all of the symptoms of colds and flu (e.g. coughing, sneezing and running nose) are nature's way of trying to drive the virus from the body and one should therefore take medicines like cough suppressants and decongestants with caution as they can prolong the illness and even make it worse in the long run.

How can I prevent colds and flu in my child?
  • A strong and healthy immune system will protect your child from all types of illnesses, including colds and flu. Keep your child’s immunity in peak condition with the following tips:
  • As a deficiency of certain vitamins and minerals can weaken the immune system, it is important to feed your child a healthy, balanced diet. Ensure a wide variety of fruit and vegetables and limit junk food and candy. If your child is a picky eater or avoids healthy food like the plague, use a daily multivitamin supplement, including Vitamin C and zinc.
  • Keep your child away from second-hand cigarette smoke and obvious sources of pollution like exhaust fumes near busy roads.
  • Avoid unnecessary use of prescription medications, especially antibiotics and steroid drugs.
  • A healthy lifestyle including a balanced diet and regular physical exercise will help to keep your child healthy, strong and protected from illness.
  • Limiting the bacteria and viruses that your child comes into contact with, will also decrease their risk of falling ill.
