Nightmares and Night Terrors
Bad dreams (nightmares) and night terrors are not
uncommon in children and can be very distressing for
little ones and their parents alike. These night
time upsets may be infrequent and transient or may
happen often - due to anxiety or other emotional
problems in children. Please see below for more
information from our Clinical Psychologist on how to
manage nightmares and night terrors, as well as tips
about when you should seek professional help.
What
are Natural Kids Bad Dream Sprinkles?
Nightmares and night terrors can be difficult to
manage
in the middle of the night, when parents and
children are tired and little ones are difficult to
console. Always there to help when you need it,
Natural Kids have developed a gentle, yet effective,
natural remedy which will help to settle your child
after the occasional nightmare or night terror,
while also helping to restore healthy sleep patterns
in the child who suffers from frequent night time
disturbances.
Natural Kids Bad Dream Sprinkles contain a
combination of gentle yet effective ingredients that
are traditionally used to provide comfort and to
settle your little one in times of fear and anxiety.
Safe and easy to administer, the pleasant tasting
granules of Bad Dream Sprinkles are sprinkled on the
tongue and rapidly absorbed in the mouth to provide
immediate relief to your child. Granules are sweet
tasting and fine enough to be taken even by babies
and small children, many of whom come to associate
the taste with comfort and security.
Bad Dream Sprinkles are especially formulated to
offer immediate comfort to your child and to promote
an easy return to normal, healthy sleep. They may
also be used preventatively for children with
chronic and frequent nightmares or night terrors.
Bad Dream Sprinkles contain a combination of herbal
and homeopathic ingredients that are 100% safe and
natural. Like all Feelgood Health products, Bad
Dream Sprinkles have been developed with care by our
practising Clinical Psychologist, and are
manufactured according to the highest pharmaceutical
standards. Individual ingredients are
well-researched and have been specially chosen for
their high safety profile in children’s remedies.
What are the
Ingredients?
Bad Dream Sprinkles contain the following carefully
chosen herbal and homeopathic ingredients in
therapeutic dosages:
Aconite (30C) is a
proven homeopathic remedy that is traditionally used
to alleviate sudden fears, anxiety and restlessness
resulting from frights and traumatic experiences.
Aconite is particularly effective when taken at the
onset of the distress.
Kali Phos (6C)
is a homeopathic remedy that is used to relieve
anxiety and uncertainty and is especially useful in
cases of a sudden fright, commonly experienced by
the child who has a nightmare.
Nat. Sulph. (6C), a
gentle yet effective biochemic tissue salt, will
soothe fear and insecurity and clear confusion. Nat.
Sulph. is particularly suited to children who are
easily startled and frightened.
Passiflora Incarnata
(Passion Flower) is widely used as a natural
calmative. Passiflora will relieve nervous
restlessness and soothe stress and anxiety. The
relaxing properties of Passiflora encourage rest and
promote healthy sleep as part of the natural
recovery process.
Matricaria Recutita
(Chamomile)
has been used since the time of the Ancient
Egyptians as a relaxing nervous system tonic that
aids restful sleep. German chamomile is
traditionally used to calm frayed nerves and anxiety
The mild, natural sedative action of German
Chamomile makes it a particularly useful herb for
night time use.
Lactose
(inactive ingredient)
How have Bad Dream Sprinkles helped other children?
“No mother should be without this remedy. It is the
only way I can get my children back to sleep after a
bad dream. Aside from that I used Bad Dream
Sprinkles regularly over two weeks for my 4 year old
daughter and she is no longer having as many terrors
as before. Sleep is returning to our house!”
Gloria J, NY
“My wife normally writes these kind of things but I
felt I had to let you know, from a dad’s point of
view, how great your Bad Dream Sprinkles are. They
really, really work. My wife and I are up much less
at night and everyone is much happier the next day.
It is so great to feel like a happy family again”
Very grateful father, Idaho
“My son is three and a half and the first time he
had a night terror I panicked. I didn’t know what
was going on. He suddenly woke up screaming and
crying and nothing I did seemed to calm him down. I
felt so useless and powerless as a mother. For the
first time ever he didn’t seem to know me or want
me. A friend recommended Bad Dream Sprinkles to me
and I am so glad she did. I wasn’t sure at first but
bought them anyway. Two days later Sam woke
screaming again and I gave him the sprinkles. I
could not believe how well they worked. He seemed to
calm down almost immediately and was fast asleep
again in less than 15 minutes. Previously it took
over half an hour to get him back to sleep. I can’t
thank you enough for this fantastic product”
Mrs J Halkett
How
do I use Bad Dream Sprinkles?
Directions:
-
Acute:
Sprinkle a generous pinch onto the tongue when
needed. May be repeated in 10 - 15 minutes if
necessary.
-
Preventative:
Sprinkle a generous pinch onto the tongue before
bedtime. May be repeated during the night if
necessary.
Caution:
The natural ingredients in Bad Dream Sprinkles have
a high safety profile and are well tolerated without
side effects. However, due to their sensitive
systems, Bad Dream Sprinkles are not recommended for
babies under 6 months unless under medical
supervision.
How long until I
see results?
The soothing and calming effect on your child should
be noticed within minutes. Children using Bad Dream
Sprinkles preventatively should experience a gradual
decline in frequency and intensity of nightmares and
night terrors.
How long will a
bottle last?
This will depend on frequency of use. Bad Dream
Sprinkles come in a 20g bottle of fine granules and
only a pinch is needed at a time. There are more
than a hundred doses in each bottle, making bad
dream sprinkles very economical.
Information on Nightmares and Night Terrors

educational purposes only and is not intended to be

When in doubt, please consult your health
practitioner.
Little children are learning new information and
absorbing new experiences at an exceptionally rapid
rate. This often makes them very prone to bad dreams
and waking up at night. This can be very distressing
for both parent and child. The interrupted and
disturbed sleep that can result often leaves
everyone feeling groggy the next day.
There is a difference between nightmares and
night terrors.
Nightmares are scary dreams that awaken children and
make them afraid to go back to sleep. Nightmares can
occur for no known reason, but may also be caused by
something that is upsetting, worrying or frightening
your child. These experiences can be real or
imagined. From about the age of 6 months it is
normal for children to have the occasional bad
dream. For example a toddler going to kindergarten
for the first time may have nightmares about being
separated from his or her parents. The older child
may have nightmares about real dangers or even
death. Nightmares usually occur during the REM
(rapid eye movement) period which happens during the
last third of sleep. Children waking from a bad
dream are fully conscious and aware of their
surroundings, although they may be a little confused
and obviously distressed. (see more information
about dealing with nightmares below)
Night terrors usually occur in young children and are considered normal
up until the age of about 6 or 7 years. Night
terrors occur soon after your child goes to sleep,
usually within the first two hours, and children do
not wake up completely. When waking from a night
terror, your child only partially wakes from sleep
and can exhibit a wide variety of thrashing type
movements and utterances. Although night terrors are
harmless they can be very frightening for parents.
Parents are understandably distressed when their
little child ‘wakes up’ screaming, thrashing,
kicking, mumbling and in a state of panic, almost
impossible to comfort. Children may not seem to
recognise their parents and can appear almost
psychotic in their behaviour. Parents confronted by
this difficult situation in the middle of the night
often don’t know what is going on or what to do to
comfort their child. Children will eventually settle
back into a deep sleep and commonly have no
memory of the episode, unlike children with
nightmares who will often talk about their
experiences the following day.
These are some of the common characteristics of
night terrors that you may notice as a parent or
caregiver:
-
You cannot waken your child completely
-
You find it impossible to comfort your child
-
Children may fail to recognise or even see their
parents, even though their eyes may be open
-
Your child may suddenly find commonplace items
in the room extremely scary
-
The night terror episode usually lasts between
10 and 30 minutes, after which the child goes
back into a deep sleep
-
Children usually have no recollection of the
event the next morning. (see more information
about dealing with night terrors below)
How do I prevent and deal with nightmares?
Here are some simple suggestions to help you deal
with and prevent nightmares in your youngster:
-
The best thing to do after a nightmare is to
hold, love, comfort and reassure your child;
-
Try and talk about the nightmare the next day.
You may find that it is related to a simple fear
or event which needs reassurance or discussion;
-
Don’t let your child watch inappropriate and
violent television or movies. This is well known
to cause nightmares;
-
If your child is fearful, leave the bedroom door
open to encourage a feeling of security and
closeness to the rest of the family;
-
Allow children to have a security blanket or a
comfort toy if this helps them to settle.
-
Sit with children until they are calm to
encourage them to go back to sleep in their own
bed;
-
Don’t spend too long searching for the
‘monster’. A quick look and reassurance is
sufficient. Too much searching will make it seem
that monsters really do exist!
-
Read stories to your child that deal with
nightmares in a positive manner;
-
Help your child to relax before bed time e.g. by
reading a story
When should I worry about my child’s nightmares?
If any of the following apply to your child you may
need to consult your health care practitioner or
psychologist:
-
If the nightmares seem to be getting worse or
happening more often;
-
If night
time fears start to interfere with daytime
activities and children seem increasingly
anxious at all times;
-
If you have any other fears, questions or
concerns about your child’s nightmares.
How can I help my child during a night terror?
There is nothing more distressing for a parent than
feeling helpless and unable to comfort a child
waking from a night terror. Unlike the child who has
a nightmare, children waking from a night terror are
irrational and full of panic. The goal of coping
with your child’s night terror is to facilitate a
return to normal, restful sleep. This is not always
as easy as it sounds, so here are a few tips:
-
Don’t try to wake your child up. You very rarely
succeed and can just make the situation worse;
-
Turn the lights down so that there are fewer
shadows. Shadows can be very confusing and
menacing to partially woken and scared children;
-
If it helps, try to hold your child in your
arms. Children having a night terror may resist
this, so don’t take it personally if your child
resists;
-
Don’t shake or shout at your child. This often
causes children to become more upset and afraid;
-
You need to protect your child from injury.
During a night terror, children can thrash
about, fall down stairwells or walk into walls
and windows. Safety is always of prime
importance;
-
Although it may seem to on forever, try and
remember that the night terror will pass and
your child will go back to sleep with no
recollection the following day;
-
If your child is prone to night terrors, you
will need to explain this to caregivers and
babysitters. Tell them what to expect and how to
deal with it.
-
Over tiredness and a lack of routine can trigger
night terrors. Ensure that your child goes to
bed at a reasonable and regular hour.
If your child seems to have fallen into a pattern of
night terrors you can try to break the cycle by
following these steps:
·
Over a period of several nights, note how long after
falling asleep your child experiences the night
terror. You will begin to notice that this is fairly
consistent.
Once
you have established the pattern, you can start to
break the cycle.
·
Begin to wake your child 15 minutes before the
expected time of the night terror.
·
Keep your child fully awake and out of bed for 5
minutes and then let them go back to bed.
·
Continue this for seven consecutive nights and you
should see a break in the cycle.
When to worry about nightmares and night terrors?
Nightmares and night terrors themselves are harmless
and usually pass without any other problems
occurring. However, especially when they are
frequent and are accompanied by other symptoms, they
may be an indication that all is not well with your
child. Please consult your health care practitioner
if you notice any of the following:
-
If your child shows any signs of jerking,
stiffening or drooling. This may indicate a
seizure rather than a night terror or nightmare.
-
If night terrors continue unabated, even after
you have tried the consecutive waking for seven
nights as described above.
-
If your child does something dangerous during an
episode.
-
If your child seems to have daytime fears as
well.
-
If you feel that family stress may be a factor,
it might be a good idea to seek guidance and
counselling.
-
If
you have any other fears, questions or concerns
about your child’s nightmares, always err on the
side of caution and consult your health
professional or psychologist.
