All about Flu
Influenza, commonly called flu, is a viral infection
that usually surfaces during the winter months.
It can range from a relatively mild short-lived
infection to a serious life threatening condition
(such as the Spanish flu epidemic in 1918 which
killed millions of people). While our immune
systems can build up resistance to well defined
viral illnesses like measles and mumps, this
is more difficult in the case of flu. People
can contract flu many times because the viruses
that cause flu are able to mutate (change),
making it difficult for our immune systems to
keep up.
Flu
is an airborne infection and is spread in tiny
droplets when people sneeze or cough, but it
can also be spread by other means. An example
would be when the tiny droplets from the nose
get onto the hands and can therefore be spread
by physical contact with the flu sufferer. Because
it is easily spread from person to person, flu
outbreaks are more common where people are in
close contact with each other - especially in
places like schools, prisons, residential homes
and other institutions.
What are the symptoms of Flu?
If
you are exposed to the flu virus, it could take
two or three days for you to develop symptoms.
Flu usually has a relatively rapid onset, unlike
a cold which can occur more gradually and is
generally milder and confined to the nose, throat
and respiratory tract. Symptoms of flu may include
sudden high temperatures, blocked or running
nose, sore throat, coughing, fatigue, muscle
and joint pains, loss of appetite and sometimes
even gastric symptoms such as nausea and vomiting.
Sometimes
flu can lead to secondary infections like bronchitis,
pneumonia, ear, tonsil and throat infections,
croup and even heart and brain inflammation
- although the latter is not common. Some children
can also develop febrile convulsions (fits)
as a result of the high fever. Although flu
is more common in children, serious complications
are more frequent in the elderly, those with
diabetes, kidney, lung and chronic heart disease
as well as those with compromised immune systems
as in the case of AIDS/HIV infection.
How is Flu usually
treated?
For
many people, flu may be a relatively mild illness
and is best treated with bed-rest until the
fever and other symptoms subside. This also
helps to limit the spread of the infection to
others. Over the counter medicines like paracetamol,
as well as various cough and cold products are
often used to treat symptoms. However, many
of these come with side effects. It is also
important to remember that all of the symptoms
of flu (e.g. coughing, sneezing and running
nose) are nature's way of trying to drive the
flu virus from the body and one should therefore
take medicines like cough suppressants and decongestants
with caution as they can prolong the illness
and even make it worse in the long run.
Some
doctors prescribe antibiotics for flu infection.
However, as flu is a virus, antibiotics are
not effective for flu and only serve to further
reduce immune strength. However, in some cases,
antibiotics may be prescribed for secondary
bacterial infections associated with the flu.
It is important to look after yourself when
you have the flu so that you do not develop
secondary infections and can recover from the
flu more quickly.
Prevention
is better than cure!
Flu vaccination
is advisable for people at risk as well as those
who work with people at high risk. The chances
of contracting some types of flu are also reduced
by using antiviral drugs such as Amantidine.
While both the flu vaccine and antiviral drugs
can be effective, there are problems and side
effects associated with both.
Flu shots and
oral vaccines can cause mild flu-like symptoms
(oral vaccines) and even severe allergic reactions
and have also been associated with the development
of Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS).
Side effects of antiviral drugs can include
nausea, loss of appetite and concentration problems.
Many people, however, do not develop any side
effects at all. It is always advisable to discuss
flu vaccination with your doctor as benefits
need to be weighed up against disadvantages
when making the choice of whether or not to
be vaccinated.
Alternatives to the Flu Vaccine
Some
people prefer not to use the conventional flu
vaccines for various reasons, while others are
not able to do so due to allergies or other
conditions. Flu vaccines are prepared on chicken
embryos and are therefore not safe for those
with egg and chicken allergies. People who previously
developed Guillain-Barre Syndrome should also
not be vaccinated. From a naturopathic point
of view, frequent vaccination can weaken immune
functioning and ultimately lead to ill health
and more serious illnesses. Whether or not you
have yourself vaccinated, it is important to
know that there are other choices which are
equally effective without the side effects associated
with conventional flu vaccines.
What
is OralFlu Protect?
OralFlu
Protect is especially formulated to protect
you against flu infection safely and effectively.
The remedy combines a homeopathic formulation
of the current year's flu vaccine with a combination
of herbs well known to support immune functioning.
As
a homeopathic preparation of the Flu virus
vaccine, OralFlu Protect will stimulate the
body’s immunity in a similar way, but without
toxic side effects occurring because of crude
virus being injected into the blood stream.
Taken at the start of the flu season, OralFlu
Protect will stimulate the body’s “vital force”
which will in turn enhance the body’s immunity
specifically to fight off the virus strain
for the current year.
OralFlu Protect may be used prophylactically
(preventatively) and will also assist with
speedy recovery from symptoms associated with
the flu, including secondary infections such
as bronchitis and pharyngitis. Used
as a prophylactic (preventative) it prepares
the body’s immune system to respond immediately
after contamination by the flu virus instead
of the usual ten day window period needed
for the body to produce antibodies specific
for the current strain. It also aids with
speedy recovery if already afflicted and assists
in overcoming symptoms associated with the
flu. The other remedies making up the preparation
being effective in treating secondary infection
like bronchitis and pharyngitis (sore throat).

for one season's usage, depending on frequency
of use. Each bottle contains 125 tablets.
How has OralFlu Protect helped
others?
"I use
this remedy for my whole family and recommend
it to all of my friends. We use it at the
beginning of the season and for a short while
if any 'flu symptoms threaten to pop up. Since
we have been using it my family rarely becomes
ill during winter. " Deborah B,
UK
"My children used to get ill every year.
They are in day care and it seems that every
winter all the kids get sick with the flu
and it just keeps going round and round the
school. With the flu came the tonsils and
the ear infections and the bronchitis and
it seemed as though we were living at the
doctor and taking non-stop antibiotics which
I hated. Since we began this product, there
has not been one single cough, cold, ear infection,
etc. My daughter developed infected tonsils
and we gave her OralFlu Protect with Throat
and Tonsil Dr and it went away. No more antibiotics
and I have my healthy kids back!" Michele,
CT
"Thank you for this wonderful alternative
to the flu shots and antibiotics!"
Sheila B.
"My baby always developed ear infections
with a cold or flu and this has not happened
even ONCE since I have been using the
OralFlu Protect and FloraFlu at the first
sign of a sniffle. Your products always
live up to their promises and I LOVE your
