About our Natural Lice Treatment Products

The Natural Kids Naughty Nits Combo-Pack is your all-round, safe and natural option for the eradication and prevention of lice.

Just talking about lice and nits is enough to make you feel all itchy and produce that ‘icky’ feeling, but recurring infestation with head lice is extremely common, particularly during the early school years. Lice and nits are an almost inevitable part of growing up and can infest even the cleanest of children!

Repeated exposure to the dangerous chemicals in over the counter treatments and lice shampoos can be more harmful to your child than to the lice themselves, not to mention the fact that the lice are becoming increasingly resistant to these chemicals. Lice can be extremely difficult to eradicate and often one or two lice are missed during shampooing and household cleaning. Luckily Natural Kids is there to help control and prevent lice naturally!

The herbal and aromatherapy ingredients in our Naughty Nits Combo-Pack are 100% safe and natural and contain no toxic chemicals. This means that you can confidently and safely use these products on your child as often as you need to.

Working together safely and synergistically:

  • Naughty Nits Shampoo will help to eradicate lice and nits from your child’s hair

  • Naughty Nits Hair Oil will prevent re-infestation and will help to loosen and remove nits.

  • Naughty Nits Spritzer will help to keep lice infestation at bay and to protect your child during lice epidemics.

Like all Feelgood Health products, the products in the Naughty Nits Combo-Pack have been developed with care by our Natural Health team and are manufactured according to the highest pharmaceutical standards. Individual ingredients are well-researched and have been specially chosen for their high safety profile in children's health.

More information on these natural ingredients

·         Azadirachta indica (Neem) originates from the Bay of Bengal and is a highly prized Ayurvedic herb used to protect people from insect pests. The natural insecticidal properties are due to the component Azadirachtin A which affects the feeding, developmental and reproductive processes of the insects. In addition the anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties of Azadirachta make it an ideal natural remedy for pesky infestations. Not surprising then that the wood is highly valued for its worm resistant properties!

·       Rosmarinus officinalis (Rosemary) is a native Mediterranean shrub that is now cultivated widely elsewhere. The strong fragrance of Rosemary makes it a natural insect repellent and the oil is well known to smother and suffocate pests. Rosemary not only stimulates hair follicles to promote healthy hair growth, but is also a nourishing conditioner and tonic for the hair itself, leaving the strands soft and silky and easy to comb.

·        Lavender is one of the most popular herbs with a wide variety of uses. Lavender has been used since Roman Times as a bath additive and it is not surprising that it derives its name from the Latin word ‘lavare’ meaning ‘to wash’. Aside from its wonderful fragrance, Lavender is a well known cleansing herb with natural antiseptic and insect repellent properties. The soothing and calming effects of lavender will help to settle anxiety and distress.

·        Melaleuca alternifolia (Tea Tree Oil) contains a large number of active constituents which have well known antiseptic and insecticide properties. One of Tea Tree oil’s most powerful properties is its ability to ward off and repel parasites, including head lice. Not only will Tea Tree Oil repel and smother the lice, but it will also cleanse the bites and help the body to resist secondary infection

·        Pelargonium Graveolens (Rose Geranium) is native to South Africa but is now cultivated in the Mediterranean region, Africa, Asia and Europe. Pelargonium owes its powerful insect repellent qualities to its rich content of Citronella oils. In addition Pelargonium has well known antiseptic properties and will impart a beautiful orange-rose fragrance to the product.

These essential oils not only safely repel and smother the lice but also loosen the nits from the hair shaft, allowing them to be combed out using a fine toothed nit comb.

How have the Naughty Nits products helped others?

“Finally I have found an effective product that is not poisonous for my child. This has been an ongoing battle for the last year and I thought I was about to go crazy. No matter how much effort I put in to eradicating it, my son kept picking it up again at school. After using the Naughyt Nits shampoo and oil I have been using the Spritzer regularly and we are now free of it for almost three months. This is the longest clear patch we have had in the last year” Carolyn B, Michigan

“Thank you for your brilliant products! This is the only natural solution for lice that has worked and trust me I have tried many! I will be recommending it to everyone I know with kids” DH, mother of four

“As a pre-school teacher we encounter this problem on a regular basis. There is always a lot of discussion and arguments amongst the parents about what works and what doesn’t and who has treated their child properly and who hasn’t and so it goes on. One mother tried your Naughty Nits range after our third outbreak in as many months and swore by it. She told the other parents about it and many more decided to try it too. Well, it has now been four months since the last outbreak and counting… so thank for allowing me to focus back on teaching again” Serina K, USA

Information on Nits and Lice

Please note that this information is offered for educational purposes only and is not intended to be a substitute for professional medical attention. When in doubt, please consult your health practitioner.

Lice and nits are extremely common and can occur in any age group, although they are most prevalent in elementary and pre-school children and their families. Most families have at least one experience with lice during their children’s younger years. Lice do not jump or fly, but they can crawl very quickly and are exceptionally easily spread from person to person.

Head lice are parasitic insects that live on the scalp and hair of the head. Nits are the eggs that the lice lay on the hair shaft. Lice and nits are extremely common and have nothing to do with cleanliness, hygiene or socio-economic status. In fact, the cleaner your hair the more they like it!

Tell me more about Lice and Nits…..

The adult lice are about 2-4 mm long wingless insects with six legs. In fact they often look a lot like a grain of rice with legs as their body is a translucent grayish-white color. Hooks surrounding the mouth allow them to attach to the scalp to feed. Similar to mosquitoes, lice pierce the scalp with two needle-like tubes that inject salivary juices to prevent the blood clotting while they feed. When engorged with blood their bodies turn a reddish-brown color. Lice depend on blood to survive and, although they can survive for up to 55 hours without it, they will starve to death after that.

Lice move freely around the head and can easily move to another person, piece of furniture or hairbrush. They normally remain for about a month on one host before moving off. The female lays about 3-10 eggs (nits) per day. The nits are translucent, whitish and pin-point in size and are glued tightly to the base of the hair shaft. Regular brushing will not dislodge them. The eggs hatch after about 6-10 days and the newly hatched larvae must feed within 24 hours to prevent starvation. These larvae develop into mature adult lice, capable of reproduction, in about one week.

It is the faeces deposited by the larvae and the adult lice that causes the itching as the skin developes an allergic reaction to the lice stool. Lice have a lifespan of about one month, but continued re-infestation can take place if proper measures are not taken to eradicate them from all members of the family as well as furniture, bedding and other household items. (Scroll down for more information on eradicating lice)

How do you get lice?

Lice are rapidly spread by contact either with another infested person or with clothing or objects that an infested person has been in contact with. Lice can live without a human host for up to 55 hours. The most common ways to get lice are the following:

  • Direct head to head contact with a person who has lice. You only have to watch how children play together to understand why lice is so common in that age group.

  • Direct contact with items that an infested person has been in contact with eg car seats, upholstered chairs, beds, towels

  • Wearing infested clothing eg hats, scarves, sweaters etc

  • Using infested hairbrushes and combs

  • They can also be spread in shared coat racks and lockers

What are the signs of lice infestation?

The most common signs and symptoms are as follows:

  • You may see nits on the hair strands or lice in the hair close to the scalp. This is a sure fire diagnosis

  • A tickling or crawling feeling of something moving in your hair

  • Itching or a rash on the head or the neck. This is due to an allergic reaction to the bites and faeces. Scratching can lead to the development of sores which can sometimes become infected.

  • The scalp feels irritable and uncomfortable

Where are head lice commonly found?

Lice and nits can occur all over the head and scalp but the two most common sites are:

  • On the scalp behind the ears

  • Near the neckline at the back of the neck

If you suspect that you or your child has lice, these are the best places to look. Head lice are rarely found in eyebrows, eyelashes or elsewhere on the body.

What else must I do to treat lice and prevent re-infestation?

Because they spread so quickly, head lice need to be treated as soon as they are found. In addition to careful shampooing and combing of the affected persons scalp and hair, the following measures should be followed to eradicate them from the household:

  • Check the infested person's hair regularly for the next ten days or so in case of recurrence.

  • All combs, brushes and hair accessories should be cleaned with the remaining shampoo and then preferably boiled.

  • Wash all clothing, bedding, towels and removable furniture coverings in hot water, at least 130°F and if possible dry in a hot dryer for 20-40 minutes.

  • Clothing or items that cannot be washed should be sent to the dry cleaners.

  • Any items that cannot be washed or dry cleaned should be tied up in a black bag and left for 14 days.

  •  Vacuum floors and non-washable furniture extremely well, including all the corners and folds. Then tightly seal and discard the vacuum bag.

  • Wash all metal, plastic and other washable surfaces with a bleach and water solution.

It is imperative to tackle lice infestation head on and with great gusto! If furniture, clothes and other household items aren’t cleaned sufficiently, all your hard work removing the lice and nits in the hair will go to waste as re-infestation with these hardy little creatures will likely occur.
