Créche Syndrome: Little bodies need big support
How you can support good health for your little ones whilst not in your care...
posted: May 2009
In recent years, more and more parents working outside the home have needed to rely on external caregivers and daycare facilities, pre-schools or crèches. This means that many children are in a set environment for most part of their waking day. With so many children concentrated in a particular space, it is no surprise that if one child has a cold or flu soon many children are sniffling and sneezing. This is due to the fact that children and small infants are still developing immunity to specific pathogens - their immune systems are far more susceptible to germs and bacteria than older children or teens. When little ones manage to recover, they can often find themselves catching recurrent bouts of infection and flu doing the rounds at their crèche – hence the term ‘créche syndrome’.

The bottom line is this: for many, daycare is unavoidable and pre-school is a fact of life! Young children will be exposed to an array of activities and experiences (all good at helping the immune system to build antibodies). In must be accepted that ear infections, tummy upsets, runny noses and flu are bound to affect your child at some point...

Certain medications conventionally prescribed for children (especially antibiotics) may come with side effects and may set up a cycle that weakens the immune system in the long run (see our article on the antibiotic cycle). Luckily, there are solutions – and we have chosen to focus on the most common areas likely to affect your little one, with helpful tips and natural treatments:

1. Upset Tummy, Vomiting and Diarrhoea
Vigorous activity + excitement + food = tummy ache! Small children have delicate digestive systems, so it doesn’t take a whole lot to upset their stomachs. Little one’s that are very active at play tend not to wait to let their food settle – and are quickly on to the next activity. This can lead to painful tummy ache while sticky fingers and sharing sweets or utensils can lead to ‘tummy bugs’ and infection that can be accompanied by vomiting and/or diarrhoea.

Natural Treatments:

TummyTrumbles - natural remedy containing Agrimony: an effective herb for treating diarrhoea and reducing colicky cramping stomach pains. The analgesic, anti-inflammatory and anti-viral properties of this products’ ingredients make this an ideal natural remedy for 'tummy bugs'.

KiddieVom – soothing natural remedy containing Ginger that has strong anti-inflammatory and pain relieving properties often used to combat nausea and calm tummies gently.

Tips:

  • Vomiting and diarrhoea can both lead to dehydration if fluids are not replaced. Make sure your child has adequate liquid intake - drinks containing sugar calm the stomach better than other liquids.
  • Send your child to daycare with healthy snacks
  • Speak to your child’s caregiver about the food consumed during the day
  • Teach your child to practice good hygiene and to wash hands before eating

When to worry - Consult your doctor if:

Your child is vomiting excessively or is unable to keep any fluids down for an extended period of time, if there is blood in the vomit, severe abdominal pain, a high temperature or if vomiting is triggered by bright light and accompanied with a stiff neck.

2. Colds and Flu (and/or fever)
As we know, children seem to always be sick. Their immune systems need constant boosting, and it is vital that their little bodies are supported when they are not well. Créches are breeding grounds for germs and bacteria. Added to this are weather changes, constant activity from indoors to outdoors and close proximity to other children. Often repeated colds and ‘flu lead to weakened immune systems and secondary infections like ear infections, bronchitis, tonsillitis and even pneumonia.

KiddieBoost may be taken preventatively to strengthen the immune system or to speed up recovery during an infection. Easy to use drops are simply mixed into juice or water.

KiddieCool – soothing remedy for fevers, contains Yarrow, Meadowsweet and Passiflora for gentle and easy relief.

Congesto-K Spritzer – therapeutic spray to help keep airways open during the night, and relaxes the body to induce peaceful sleep without side effects – all natural ingredients.

Tips:

  • Teach your children to cover their mouths and noses every time they cough or sneeze. This will reduce the number of infectious organisms floating around in the air at their school.
  • Regularly washing hands is also of huge importance in limiting your child’s exposure to germs. The most important times for children to wash their hands are after sneezing or coughing, after toileting, upon leaving public areas like daycare centers, restaurants, playgrounds etc. Washing hands before eating should also become a habit.

When to worry - Consult your doctor if:

Your child is three to 6 months old with a fever over 38 degrees Celsius, six months and older with a fever 38 degrees Celsius that lasts for more than 2 days, 3 months to 2 years of age with a fever of 39 degrees Celsius, Earache or pulling at ears, has sever headache, stomach pain, swollen joints or stiff neck or problems breathing, fever does not seem to improve or cannot keep food down.

3. Ear, Nose and Throat
Ear infections, blocked noses and sore throats tend to go hand-in-hand. This is because these structures are all inter-connected. ‘Glue-ear’ is a common condition that tends to happen in small kids, while sore throats and especially blocked or running noses are almost a constant at daycare or crèche!

Natural Treatments:

Eddy Ear Sprinkles - internal treatment for ear infection, especially formulated for babies and children under 10 years old.

Ear-OK Drops – soothing natural remedy (extremely gentle formula) - used directly into the ear, helping to reduce pain and inflammation - as well as treating the ear infection locally.

Throat and Tonsil Dr. – no-fuss homeopathic sprinkles assists with sore throats and tonsillitis. As the ears, nose, and throat are interconnected, this ingredient also supports the health of the nose and its passages, as well as that of the ear canals.

Congesto-K KiddieRub – therapeutic natural oil used to clear congestion and blocked airways. Also great to help calm little one’s who feel unwell.

Congesto-K Spritzer – therapeutic spray to help keep airways open during the night, and relax the body to induce peaceful sleep without side effects – all natural aromatherapy ingredients.

Congesto-K Aromatherapy Bath Crystals – contains aromatherapy oils to add to the bath at night to open little airways (and adult ones too!) and promote peaceful sleep.

Tips:

  • Make sure your child rests in bed as much as possible.
  • Encourage your child to drink lots of fluids.
  • Use a humidifier in the child's room to make dry air easier to breathe.
  • Blocked and runny noses can be a real problem for children. Infants can only breathe through their noses and even older children may have difficulty breathing through their mouths, especially at night. Suctioning is a good method to clean the nose. For younger infants, use a rubber suction bulb to remove the secretions gently. Older children can blow their noses, but encourage gentle blowing.
  • If your child’s nose is blocked or stuffy, you will need to remove the dry mucous. Use saline nose drops to loosen the mucous. These nose drops are available at most pharmacies. One minute after using the nose drops, use a soft rubber suction bulb to gently suck out the loosened mucous.

When to worry - Consult your doctor if:

Your child has earache accompanied by fever, has a stiff neck or problems breathing, seems lethargic, congestion does not seem to improve or cannot breathe properly.
