How has
Congesto-K Pillow Spritzer helped other children?
'Just
wanted to tell you how much I love your natural remedies. When my kids were
sick this Winter your kiddie products like the Congesto-K Kiddie Rub and
Spritzer and the Sniffly Sprinkles saved my kids from a lot of discomfort,
tears and sleepless nights. I will not be without your remedies again and
will be sure to stock up before next Winter!
Regards,
Mrs. J.D. Adams'
'Congesto-K
Spritzer has been super for my little boy. We first tried it when he had a
bad cold and was barely sleeping at all. It worked so well and he slept so
soundly when we had sprayed it on his pillow, that once he was well again we
just kept using it and the smell is lovely too.' Tertia, PA
'I have
found your Congesto-K remedies great for my kids who, unfortunately, both
inherited my genes for allergies. They were always blocked up and snoring
most nights but especially when the pollen count was up. Congesto-K is the
first natural product that has really helped. And they sleep a lot better
these days too! Thanks a lot!' Genevieve T.

Health information
on colds and flu in children
In compliance with government health regulations, Feelgood

intended to diagnose, cure, treat or prevent any disease. All of our

nose and respiratory system.
It is in the spirit of helping to increase awareness of the
relationship between diet, lifestyle and health that we offer the following
information on upper respiratory tract infections in children. Please note
that this information is offered for educational purposes only and is not
intended to be a substitute for professional medical attention. When in
doubt, please consult your health practitioner.
Colds and Flu
Colds and flu are
infections which mainly involve the upper respiratory tract and are caused
by viruses. Colds and flu can cause many of the same symptoms, but a cold
is generally milder, while flu tends to be more severe.
There are more than
100 different viruses that can cause the common cold! Flu is also caused by
viruses - the Influenza virus. There are fewer viruses that cause flu and
this is why a vaccination can be produced.
Symptoms of colds and
flu's. What is the difference?
The first signs and symptoms of a cold normally present as feeling tired, sneezing, coughing and having a runny nose. Your child
may not have a fever at all or may run a low fever - just 1 or 2 degrees
higher than usual. Flu generally starts more suddenly and can be more severe.
Weakness and fatigue are common. Your child may have a fever, dry cough, a
runny nose, chills, muscle aches, a headache and a sore throat. It usually
takes longer to get over the flu than a cold.
Both illnesses can
cause children to become miserable and grouchy. Flu often leads to decreased
appetite and refusal to eat. Often, with the difficulties of breathing
through a blocked nose, sleep becomes problematic too.
Why are children more
susceptible to colds and flu?
Childrens’ immune
systems are not as strong or well-developed as adults’, making them more
vulnerable to infections of all types. Children who go to kindergarten,
day-care and after-care are particularly at risk as they come into close
contact with many other children every day and we all know that hygiene and
hand-washing are not always top priorities for little ones!
How are Colds and Flu usually treated?
Colds and flu are usually treated with bed-rest and
symptomatic medication until the body’s own immune system overcomes the
infection. There are no medications to cure colds or flu. Although
antibiotics are sometimes prescribed, they are not effective against viruses
and will only help in the case of secondary infections. Children who become
repeatedly infected due to exposure at day care centers may find themselves
on one course of antibiotic after the other, often compounding the problem.
Over the counter medicines like paracetamol, as well as
various cough and cold products are often used to treat symptoms. However,
many of these come with side effects. Decongestant drugs can be very
effective, but cause side-effects like increased irritability and
hyperactivity. They can also “over-dry” the nose and mucus membranes -
causing discomfort. It is also important to remember that all of the
symptoms of colds and flu (e.g. coughing, sneezing and running nose) are
nature's way of trying to drive the virus from the body and one should
therefore take medicines like cough suppressants and decongestants with
caution as they can prolong the illness and even make it worse in the long
run.
How can I prevent colds and flu in my child?
A strong and healthy immune system will protect your child
from all types of illnesses, including colds and flu. Keep your child’s
immunity in peak condition with the following tips:
-
As a
deficiency of certain vitamins and minerals can weaken the immune system,
it is important to feed your child a healthy, balanced diet. Ensure a
wide variety of fruit and vegetables and limit junk food and candy. If
your child is a picky eater or avoids healthy food like the plague, use
a daily multivitamin supplement, including Vitamin C and zinc.
Limiting the
bacteria and viruses that your child comes into contact with, will also
decrease their risk of falling ill.
-
Teach your
children to cover their mouths and noses every time they cough or sneeze. This
will reduce the number of infectious organisms floating around in the air at
home or at their school.
-
Regularly washing hands is also of huge importance in limiting your
child’s exposure to germs. The most important times for children (and
adults) to wash their hands are after sneezing or coughing, after
toileting, upon leaving public areas like daycare centers, restaurants,
playgrounds etc. Washing hands before eating should also become
a habit.
How can I help my child to feel better and recover quickly
from a cold or flu?
-
Make
sure he/she rests in bed as much as possible.
-
Encourage your child to drink lots of fluids.
-
Use a
humidifier in the child's room to make dry air easier to breathe.
-
Blocked
and runny noses can be a real problem for children. Infants can only
breathe through their noses and even older children may have difficulty
breathing through their mouths, especially at night.
-
Suctioning is a good method to clean the nose. For younger infants,
use a rubber suction bulb to remove the secretions gently. Older
children can blow their noses, but encourage gentle blowing.
-
If
your child’s nose is blocked or stuffy, you will need to remove the
dry mucus. Use of saline nosedrops is helpful in loosening the
mucus. These nosedrops are available at most drug stores. One minute
after using the nosedrops, use a soft rubber suction bulb to gently
suck out the loosened mucus.
