Heartburn, Indigestion and Digestive Complaints in the Third Trimester of Pregnancy

Heartburn is probably the most common discomfort of the third trimester!

As the baby grows, your expanding uterus places pressure on your digestive tract and may cause the contents to be forced back upwards, leading to heartburn and indigestion.  This is caused by the acidic contents of the stomach rising up into the esophagus and causing a burning sensation in the upper chest.

Other digestive problems that occur commonly in the third trimester are constipation and hemorrhoids which are both unpleasant and often painful. These are often as a result of hormonal factors linked to pregnancy, weightgain and, of course,  the increased pressure of the baby in the abdomen.

How is heartburn usually treated?

There are many methods of reducing heartburn and digestive discomfort during pregnancy and different approaches will help different women.  Some of the best, time-tested methods are listed at the bottom of this page.

Of course, due to the possibility of side-effects and the risk of affecting your baby’s normal development, medications are always best avoided during pregnancy. There are several medications commonly used for heartburn and indigestion which are available either over the counter or by prescription but none of these should be used during pregnancy without consulting your doctor first - even OTC antacids.  Although the medications in general use are those found to have a low risk of affecting the fetus, no drugs are without risk during pregnancy.

What is BabyNature's Digesto-K?

Digesto-K is a 100% natural remedy containing herbal, homeopathic and tissue salt ingredients for addressing the troublesome symptoms of heartburn, indigestion and other digestive symptoms all so common in the third trimester. This remedy is completely safe to use during pregnancy and is a very effective alternative to the OTC and prescription antacids and other medications used for these complaints. Manufactured in convenient lactose granules, Digesto-K is simply sprinkled onto the tongue where it is absorbed by the mucous membranes of the mouth.

How do I use Digesto-K?

Sprinkle a small pinch of Digesto-K onto the tongue when needed. Granules may also be dissolved in filtered water if desired.  May be repeated after 20 minutes for up to 10 doses if necessary.

Digesto-K contains the following proven ingredients:

Mag. Phos. is a biochemic tissue salt that helps to quickly ease digestive discomfort including heartburn, acid reflux, cramps, flatulence and hiccups.  It also helps to improve general functioning of the intestines, preventing constipation.

Nat. Sulph. is also a tissue salt and is known as the 'cell cleanser'. This tissue salt regulates body fluids and helps to promote healthy functioning of the liver, pancreas, urinary tract system and digestive system.  It will prevent nausea as well as the bitter taste in the mouth often associated with acid reflux and regurgitation.

Melissa officinalis is also called lemon balm and is well-known for its soothing and calming properties as well as being widely prescribed by herbalists for the relief of all complaints related to anxiety and stress.   This herbal ingredient is excellent at relaxing cramps, improving digestion and treating gastrointestinal complaints.

Mentha Piperita is a herb from the mint family and has been used for many hundreds of years for natural relief from indigestion, nausea and heartburn. It relaxes the muscles of the digestive tract and stimulates the flow of natural digestive juices and bile, thereby assisting healthy digestion.

Phosphorus (6C) is a homeopathic remedy for digestive disorders including constipation and diarrhea.

How has Digesto-K helped others?

'During the third trimester of my pregnancy I began to feel generally uncomfortable and exhausted from lugging around so much extra weight.  I also began to suffer from the most awful heartburn which I had never before experienced in my life.  It was so severe that it would keep me awake at night for hours!!!  I decided to give your Digesto-k a chance as I was so desperate for relief but I did not want to risk my baby’s health by taking medication.  After taking the very first dose I was amazed - my heartburn was soothed almost immediately! This product helped me get through the last few months of pregnancy in comfort which I know would not otherwise have happened.' Beth, UK

'Having always suffered from GERD as well as IBS, pregnancy became a nightmare for my digestive system as all my previous symptoms worsened and I could no longer take OTC or prescription drugs.  My sister suggested your Digest OK remedy which she used while pregnant last year and I will be forever grateful that she did.  The remedy has been a lifesaver - thank you!' Jeanne D., CO

What else can help?

·         Eat small, regular meals.

·         Chew your food thoroughly and don’t eat too fast.

·         Avoid greasy, spicy foods, tea, coffee, chocolate, soda and alcohol.

·         Try not to eat too close to bed-time and don't lie down after eating.  Rather take a short, gentle walk to encourage healthy digestion.

·         Elevate the head of your bed or sleep on an extra pillow.
