Recovery from Childbirth
Pregnancy, labor and childbirth all put a strain on your body and general physical condition. Your body has gone through numerous changes in the last several months and now especially needs to recover from the trauma of childbirth. Over approximately 6 weeks following delivery or the “postpartum period” your body will gradually regain its pre-pregnancy state.
Women who have had a normal vaginal delivery may be up and about after a few days, although their bodies will take several weeks to complete the healing process. For those who have had a Caesarean birth, recovery will take longer due to the after-effects of surgery and the wound-healing process.
Pain after childbirth may take the form of sharp, contraction-like “after-pains” as the uterus shrinks to its normal size; sore muscles; pain, discomfort or numbness in the vaginal area; difficulty with urination and bowel movements and in some cases, pelvic and hip pain due to movement and destabilization of the bones. While rest and time are the best healers, a little natural help can go a long way to providing relief and speeding up the healing process!
The Natural Way
It is important to get as much sleep and rest as possible after the birth of your baby. Try to rest and take frequent breaks when your baby naps. Allow family and friends to help you during the first weeks after the birth and try to remember that your body needs to recover. If you have decided to breastfeed, feed the baby frequently to reduce the soreness and discomfort you may feel when your breasts become engorged with milk. Eat healthy, well balanced meals that include fresh fruit and vegetables to boost your immune system and increase energy levels.
Most importantly: Do not expect your home to be perfect – lower your cleaning and cooking standards! Rather, make time for yourself by having a massage, relaxing in the bath, going for a walk or visiting a friend.

'I just wanted to let you know how wonderfully effective I found your Birth-Heal tablets for my recovery from childbirth. I had a third degree tear which I was assured would keep me in pain and out of action for at least a month. I also heard of all the ghastly complications and became very apprehensive. I used your Birth-Heal product and the Easiotomy Cream, and I must say that the doctors were amazed at how well I healed and recovered. I am so grateful that I didn’t have to go through the seemingly-endless pain and inconvenience that everyone else expected. Thank you so much for a wonderful natural remedy that really works!'
- Joy T.
'I recovered so quickly after my caesarian that my husband thought I was being brave when actually I felt good and ready for action after about a week! I heard about arnica helping to heal after operations and I was so glad to find a product that was especially for pregnancy and a caesarian when I searched on the internet. This has really helped me so much I wanted to write and tell you, so thanks for giving me this opportunity. I know I will be using more of your remedies next time round as I did not know about them before during my pregnancy unfortunately. My sister has just found out that she is pregnant and I was happy to tell her about your remedies. She is thrilled because she likes the natural options. Thank you again!'

FAQ’s
Q: Why am I still having cramp-like contractions if the baby and the placenta have been delivered already?
A:
These pains are known as “afterpains”, or Postpartum uterine cramping, and can vary from mild discomfort to almost as painful as the contractions of labor. The pains are caused by contraction of the uterus as it tries to shrink itself down and prevent excessive bleeding.
There are several very effective ways of reducing these pains:
The Mag. Phos. ingredient in Birth-Heal eases all types of cramping pains and is very effective in treating afterpains.
It is also important to keep your bladder empty - try to urinate every hour as you may not feel the urge to go clearly in the days following birth.
When you feel these cramping pains starting, lie on your abdomen with a pillow underneath your uterus for a few minutes - this may worsen the pain slightly at first but it will dissipate much more quickly.
It also helps to get into a warm tub and relax - and you need the break!
Q: I have heard that urination and my first bowel movement after birth will be painful and difficult. Is this true?
A:
Due to the trauma of childbirth on the perineum, going to the bathroom is often uncomfortable in the immediate postpartum period. It is important in the first few days to keep your bladder empty as this will allow good contraction of the uterus and prevent excessive bleeding. It may also be helpful to use a squirt bottle to douse the perineum with fresh water while urinating as this will dilute the urine and reduce burning.
Many women are worried about their first bowel movement after childbirth. The best advice is to try not to worry and to allow nature to take its course. One often does not have a bowel movement for a day or two after giving birth and this usually gives you a chance to recover. Make sure that you eat lots of fresh fruit and vegetables and especially that you drink plenty of water to prevent constipation and encourage a soft stool. Once you have your first bowel movement, you will probably realise that your anxiety was greater than the actual discomfort experienced!
Q: What is the best way to care for the perineum after childbirth?
A:
Cleanliness is, obviously, of great importance though any cleansing that you do should be gentle rather than vigorous in order to prevent further injury to the perineal tissue. Always wipe from front to back after going to the bathroom and change your sanitary pad often to avoid irritation. Do not use tampons for 6 weeks after delivery. Many women also find that taking a sitz bath twice a day helps to soothe and heal the perineal area. Add a handful of kitchen salt to the water for added healing properties. BabyNature Easiotomy Cream provides natural relief as well as protection from infection and speedy recovery.
Q: What warning signs should I be aware of?
A:
Look out for the following symptoms and call your health care provider if you develop any of them as this may indicate the development of a complication.
Fever.
Increasing pain in the days or weeks following delivery.
Soaking through more than one sanitary pad or tampon per hour.
Foul-smelling vaginal discharge.
Tender, warm or reddened breasts.
What else can help?
Every woman’s experience of childbirth is different and hence the recovery period will vary depending on a number of factors. The most important things that can affect recovery after childbirth are mode of delivery - vaginal or Caesarian section, episiotomies and tears and general physical health before delivery.
One of the most important things to aid your recovery is rest. This may seem ironic as you have never had less time to do just that in your life! Try to rest whenever your baby has a nap or when your partner or other family member is around to watch the baby for a while. Your body and mind will use the time you spend resting to repair and rejuvenate itself allowing you to recover quickly.
Although it is vital to rest - it is also important to get up and about as soon as you can. Apart from the activities that are part and parcel of having a new baby (like pushing a pram and carrying your baby around the house) you should also aim to do some gentle stretching. Swimming and walking are also excellent - but don't overdo it!
The time after you have had your new baby is filled with family and friends visiting and coming to meet the new addition to the family. Although they are showing their love and concern for you, this can become a burden if you are not prepared for it. When your loved ones come around, get them to help you by doing small tasks or errands or ask them to watch the baby while you do the things you don’t usually get a chance to do. This is not the time to try and play the perfect hostess as your own health, well-being and sanity will suffer and it is vital that you look after yourself as well as your new little one at this special time.
