What to expect when your child begins teething Your baby’s first tooth is a major milestone and something to celebrate! The process leading up to this occasion though, can be fraught with anxiety and stress. Most infants get their first tooth between 6 and 8 months of age, although this can vary quite a bit. The first tooth to emerge is usually one of the bottom front teeth (incisors), usually followed by its neighbour - as teeth generally come out in pairs. How do I know whether my baby is teething? A few things that may very well indicate your child has begun teething are increased crying and irritability, drooling and putting everything in his/her mouth. Your baby’s gums may appear slightly swollen and red and feel hard. A mildly raised temperature may also be associated with teething but a severe or ongoing fever should not be attributed to this and you should consult your baby’s health care provider for any persistent fever. It is tough for parents to know that their child is in pain and also distressing when they are irritable and crying all the time. Remember, though, that teething is something all children have to go through and although it seems endless and even cruel, there will be periods when your baby is “between teeth” and, by the age of three, your child will have his/her first full set of teeth. Increased irritability, drooling, putting objects into the mouth and disturbed sleep are all associated with teething. Some less common effects are fever, diarrhea and red, swollen gums. Your baby's appetite may also be affected. How long will it last? From the first signs that your child is teething to when the tooth actually comes through the gum, will be approximately 1-2 months.
